6 reasons why you should drink water in the morning

Whether your favourite YouTubers insist that it’s the most important part of their morning routine, or you’ve heard it on the grapevine, there’s no denying that there are some great benefits to drinking water in the morning.

Water is an essential for our bodies. It helps to regulate many bodily functions, it keeps us feeling bright, and it can even help aid in weight loss. Have you ever wondered what happens when you drink water on an empty stomach in the morning or whether the claims of a higher metabolism are true? Read on to find out why drinking water in the morning is one of the best things to do for your body.

1. Improved mental performance

Dehydration can cause all kinds of nasty effects and even minor dehydration can have adverse effects on cognition. Various studies have found that there tends to be a trend of improved mental performance in study participants who ensured they stayed hydrated versus those who don’t drink very much. It’s also been found that dehydration has negative effects on short-term memory and attention span, both of which improved once participants rehydrated again.

If you’re looking for a way to improve your mental performance early in the day, drinking water in the morning is one of the ways you can achieve this.

2. Mood-boosting

As well as having an effect on mental performance, drinking water in the morning can also affect your mood. A few studies have revealed that people who tend to drink less water on average feel brighter and more alert after rehydrating.

So, if you’re someone who tends to wake up on the wrong side of the bed, you can improve your mood by drinking water in the morning. By squeezing a wedge of lemon into the water, you can help to refresh and get that ever important dose of vitamin C.

3. Clearer skin

It’s thought that because your skin is about 30% water, you can improve the appearance, health, and elasticity of your skin by staying hydrated. Doing so will help to keep your skin plump, decrease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in the long run, and will help to make your skin more resilient.

It’s important to note though that, for long term benefits, it’s important to stay hydrated at all times - not just that one drink in the morning.

4.Speeds up your metabolism

One of the benefits of drinking water in the morning is that it helps to wake you up and kick start your metabolism.

Whether you prefer to chug a glass of cold water or prefer a calming mug of warm water, you’ll be pleased to hear that the temperature of the water makes no real difference. All you need to do to give yourself a boost is to drink water when you first wake up.

5. Aids weight loss

It’s thought that drinking water in the morning can also aid with weight loss. There are two factors that may contribute to this theory - Thermogenesis and reducing your calorie intake.

A study done in 2010 showed that middle-aged and older people who drank 500ml of water before a meal saw higher weight loss than those who didn’t drink anything. This can be partly attributed to the fact that those who drank the water ate less per meal than those who didn’t drink the water, leading to a calorie deficit. So if you’re trying to lose weight, drinking water on an empty stomach may help you to eat less.

Thermogenesis is defined as the production of heat. It is theorised that when you drink a cold glass of water, the body warms it up in the stomach and uses thermogenesis to regulate the temperature, burning more calories as it does so. It’s not conclusive if this is restricted to just the mornings though.

6. Improved bodily functions

Getting the right amount of water and hydration helps to improve many different bodily functions.

By staying hydrated, your kidneys are able to work more efficiently and flush out toxins and impurities through your urine. In the same vein, drinking plenty of water makes you urinate more often which, in turn, can help to keep your urinary tract healthy as it helps to flush away bacteria that are responsible for UTIs.

Drinking plenty of water also helps to promote good cardiovascular system function as well as contributing to relieving joint pain by helping your body lubricate your joints.

There are plenty of great benefits to drinking water in the morning. Although drinking water first thing is very good for you, it’s important to remember to drink plenty of water throughout the rest of the day as well to help maintain the benefits from the morning.
